Senior Lecturer / Chaplain

Situated in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, SMMS is committed to ‘forming transforming leaders for church and nation by providing the spiritual formation and academic training required for developing skilled Methodist ministers of integrity, faithfulness, and excellence.'
Due to the retirement of Rev Prof Neville Richardson, a vacancy will occur at the end of August. Applications are now invited for that date or to commence no later than January 2011.
Primary Duties:
The successful applicant will be required to:
• Design, develop, and teach courses at Degree and Diploma level, primarily in the fields of Systematic Theology and Christian Spirituality
• Provide leadership in conceptualising and designing spiritual development projects that link the seminary, local churches, community and Cluster Partners.
• Provide leadership in the research and teaching of issues around theological education and spirituality
• In collaboration with the rest of the seminary staff, conceptualise, design and supervise spirituality based modules or community exposure programmes that contribute to teaching and learning outcomes.
• Assist the seminary staff in the area of spiritual formation research and link these to other programmes
• Assist with raising funds for the work of the Spiritual Development Programme
• Organize and manage worship and retreats for the seminarians
• Assist with the specialised vocational training programs of the seminary
• Assist with the general supervision of seminarians in relation to their spiritual and moral and character, and communal life.
Minimum Requirements:
PhD - Systematic Theology
Knowledgeable in Wesleyan Studies
Ordination in the Methodist Ministry
Minimum 10 years in pastoral ministry
Proficiency in the English Language
Advantage:
• Experience in teaching at tertiary level in Theological Education and Spirituality or a closely related field
• Experience in Spirituality education and research
• Interest in interdisciplinary dialogue around Theology and Spirituality as it intersects with issues in Education, Development, Ethics, Ecclesiology and Politics
• Experience in supervising long essays or theses.
• Published academic articles
• Proficiency in an African language
General:
The remuneration package offered includes benefits and will be dependent on the qualifications and / or experience of the successful applicant. The selection process will commence in April 2010 and will continue until a suitable candidate is appointed or a decision is taken not to fill the post.
